Music Parents Council Scholarship

Criteria

The Music Parent Council will be awarding 3 scholarships of $500 each to current graduating students at Burnaby North. These scholarships are for students who have a true passion for music and have been a contributing member of the music program at North. We are looking for students who have demonstrated leadership in the music department and have been active in the school and community.

Procedure

To apply for this MPC Scholarship, you will need to complete a short essay (250 words or less) describing how music has impacted your time here at North. Things to reflect on:

Your experiences, passion, and involvement in the music department at North
How music has been a part of your high school experience
How this scholarship will help you achieve these goals

Dogwood District / Authority Scholarship

Criteria

It’s time to start applying for the Dogwood District /Authority which is a scholarship targeted to students seeking a career in the “trades”. Students who have completed a Youth in Trades Program are a natural fit for this scholarship but anyone who fits the criteria can be considered. THERE ARE A LIMITED AMOUNT ADMINISTERED. MAKE SURE YOU APPLY AND APPLY EARLY.

Here are some things to know when filling out the application:

Elective areas for completion are: Fine Arts, Indigenous Language and Culture, Applied Skills, Physical Activity, International Languages, Community Service*, Technical and Trades Training.
“a minimum 2.5 (“C+”) Grade Point Average (GPA) calculated on the BEST 10 Grade 11 and 12, 4-credit courses including a minimum of four courses (except for Community Service) from their chosen area listed above. One of the four courses may be Work Experience 12A or B (WEX12A or B) if it is related to the student’s chosen career path.”
When filling out the application, the committee is looking for students not necessarily planning on going to a university (but are going to a technical or trade school). Remember this when applying.
Since this is a scholarship geared towards the elective areas above, the “chosen career area”, “post-secondary institution” and “program” should reflect that meaning. This is not the scholarship for future doctors, lawyers, or academics. Also, make sure that your “career area” reflects your “elective area” meaning someone who has “Fine Arts” as their elected area will probably be rejected if their career goal is to be an accountant.

Procedure

Fill out the attached application or pick one up from the scholarship bin outside Student Services.
Print and attach your school transcript.
Hand in to Ms. Mihic in Student Services or directly to her (room 2121).

demonstration of local and global issues and cultural awareness
demonstration of extensive involvement in student government/councils

BCCPAC Educational Award

Criteria

The award is open to any Grade 12 student attending a BCCPAC-member school (WE ARE MEMBERS!) who is planning to pursue post-secondary studies (academic, vocational, technical or training). The award honours a well-rounded student who is involved and interested in many things and has an understanding of the importance of parent involvement in education.

A cover letter outlining good citizenship, leadership, sportsmanship and community service interests.

An essay (300-500 words) on the value of parent involvement in education (with reference to the role of PACs, DPACs and/or BCCPAC.)

CFIG National Scholarship Program

Criteria

To be eligible for the awards:

Applicants must be Canadian residents studying in Canada.
Applicants must be enrolled or expected to enroll in a post-secondary program of at least 2 years.
Applicants must be working for a current CFIG member (retail, associate, affiliate) or be a family member of an employee of a current CFIG member.
All essays must be properly referenced.

One National scholarship winner receives $15,000 – Winner invited to annual Independent Grocer of the Year Gala in Toronto.

Four regional essay awards of $3250 each are awarded as follows:

Rick and Amanda Hansen Scholarship for Youth with Disabilities

Criteria

This scholarship aims to make a profound impact on the lives of Canadian youth with disabilities by removing financial barriers and supporting career aspirations through post-secondary education.

Funding of up to $10,000 per year (up to a maximum of $40,000) is available for youth with disabilities looking to complete a 1- to 4-year post-secondary program at a publicly funded institution in Canada.

Eligibility

Person with a disability, defined as functional limitation – whether permanent or episodic – which affects the student’s ability to participate in post-secondary education;
Under the age of 30 years as of the application deadline (May 31, 2024);
Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
Eligible for domestic tuition at a publicly funded post-secondary institution or training program at a public university, college or institute in Canada;
Enrolling full-time in the 2024/25 academic year for a 1- to 4-year post-secondary program at a publicly funded post-secondary institution in Canada; and
Not receiving other financial awards that total more than $2,500 per year (excluding student loans).
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that any funding received from the Rick & Amanda Hansen Scholarship will not negatively affect the status of any benefits and subsidies that they are eligible for.

Criteria

The TELUS Student Bursary provides financial assistance to deserving young people across the country who are committed to giving back in their local communities by taking on a social impact project.

Recipients receive a bursary valued at $3,000 (college) or $5,000 (university) to put toward tuition fees at post-secondary institutions in Canada.

Youth between the ages of 17 and 29 in critical financial need

Starting in 2024, the Jean Ip Foundation’s Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to eligible individuals pursuing post-secondary education in Canada. The program provides ten scholarships, including two at $10,000 each and eight at $5,000 each.
